The vineyard

Location :In the Saumur appellation area, the name Champigny can be added for the greatest red wines, coming from delimited areas of eight communes near Saumur.

Area :1 500 ha.

History : Capital of the Huguenots under Henri IV, Saumur has been an important trading place since the 12th century. The name of this appellation could come from the Latin campus igni or field of fire, due to the particularly hot microclimate of this area in summer.

Soil :The vineyard is scattered in small parcels, on the tuffeau (chalk) mounds and the Senonian or Eocene outcrops. The Saumur Champigny vines occupy a remarkable position on the upper Turonian plateau and on the plateaus overlying the tufa.
