The wine

Varities : Cabernet Franc (majority in the area), Cabernet Sauvignon, Pineau d’Aunis (rare)


Degustation

Eye : Bright, ruby red color.

Nose : The tuffeau brings finesse and lightness. Nose of red fruits and flowers (iris, violet).

Palate : Rather supple, sometimes very dense, with fine tannins for the reds.


The vineyard

Location : The appellation area covers 27 communes in Maine-et-Loire, 3 in Vienne and 2 in Deux-Sèvres.


Area : 390 ha


History: Capital of the Huguenots under Henri IV, Saumur has been an important wine trading center since the 12th century due to its ideal topographical conditions (see "Saumur Brut"). Today, most of the major regional wine merchants still have their headquarters in this area.


Soil: The vineyards are scattered in small patches on tufa (chalk) hills and Senonian or Eocene outcrops.
